If you qualify for Professional Client status, our account for experienced traders may be for you.

An eToro client who meets certain criteria can opt to become a Professional Client. This is a regulatory status available for experienced traders and financial professionals who are permitted to employ more advanced strategies in managing their portfolios.

To qualify, you must be able to answer yes
to at least two of the following three questions:

Have you carried out transactions, in significant size, on the relevant market at an average frequency of 10 per quarter over the previous four quarters?

Does the value of your investment portfolio exceed €500,000?

Have you worked in the financial sector in a professional capacity for at least one year, which requires knowledge of the transactions or services envisaged?

Please note: Only customers registered under eToro UK (under FCA regulation) and eToro EU (under CySEC regulation)
can apply for Professional Client status.

  • What’s the difference between a Retail Client and a Professional Client?

A Retail Client is subject to more restrictions than a Professional Client but receives more protections by law. A Professional Client may be exposed to higher risk, and therefore must act with greater responsibility and accountability, but receives access to more features than a Retail Client.
To understand the full legal description of client categorization, visit the eToro regulations page and refer to the “Client Categorization” section.

  • What happens if I do not qualify for Professional Client status?

You will retain your Retail Client status, which is the default status for all eToro users.

Retail Clients receive access to all our trading assets and can trade both manually or via Copy Trade (subject to suitability). However, Retail Clients’ leverage is restricted. Retail Clients receive certain protections such as coverage by the Investor Compensation Fund and recourse to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Furthermore, they receive negative balance protection and margin closeout restrictions.

  • Do I need an eToro Retail Client account before I can apply for a Professional Client account?

Yes. You must first open a standard eToro account before applying for Professional Client status. If you already have an account with us, and have checked your eligibility, you can apply for Professional Client status immediately.
